Torrijas with thermomix al varoma or fritas

We are going to prepare some delicious torrijas in the Thermomix varoma, avoiding the harmful fritters, so if you want to take care of yourself but still enjoy the flavor of the torrijas you should not miss this recipe.

Torrijas thermomix

To prepare these torrijas we follow the traditional recipe, bathing them in milk and rebozándolas them in egg, only that we wrap them in transparent film and cook them in the varoma so that they keep all that flavor.

Steam cooking makes the torrijas very spongy, and with the taste that we like so much, by not needing to fry them we avoid the harmful oxidized fats and lower the caloric level of them. To give that crispy touch we're going to give them a few minutes in the oven.

The final touch is sprinkle them with a mixture of sugar and cinnamon, although we can use honey if we want to try something new, they are equally delicious.

In Easter apart from torrijas we also make other dishes like Rice cakes y Castilian soup.

Ingredients to make Torrijas with thermomix al varoma or fritas

1000 g milk
100 g of sugar
1 lemon (we will only use the skin)
1 cinnamon stick or 10g of cinnamon powder
14 slices of bread from the previous day
2 large eggs
Butter to grease
750 g water
Optional
Honey

Preparation of Torrijas with thermomix al varoma or fritas

Preparations to make the torrijas with thermomix

Place the milk, the skin of the lemon, the sugar and the cinnamon in the glass of the Thermomix. Program the Thermomix 12 minutes / 90ºC / reverse rotation / 1 speed.

We reserve in another place and let temper the mixture.

We put the eggs in the glass and beat 15 seconds at 5 speed.

We reserve in a deep dish, we will use it for batter.

Cut 14 pieces of transparent film, with which we wrap the torrijas, buttering each sheet to prevent it from sticking to the egg.

Soak the slices of bread one by one in our mix of the 1 step and batter them in the egg of the 2 step, and then wrap them in the greased film of the 3 step.

We distribute half of the torrijas in the varoma, it will be necessary to cook them in 2 batches since they do not fit all in the tray.

To cook them we add the water to the glass and place the varoma in its position.

We program 25 minutes / varoma temperature / 1 speed.

Remove the transparent film and place the torrijas on a tray with baking paper or a special silicone tablecloth.

We bake 3 minutes at 250ºC. We remove them and let them warm up before bathing them with honey or sprinkle them with sugar and cinnamon.

If we prefer to fry them

If we do not want to make the torrijas to the varoma how we recommend them, they can fry them, we only skip all the part of the transparent film and the oven, instead they go from the beaten egg directly to a frying pan with plenty of oil.

These fried French toast have many more calories and are a rich but less healthy option. We recommend you follow a balanced diet and decrease the amount of fried foods and sugar in your meals 🙂
